Dr. Mertens joined the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto as a Staff Cardiologist in 2008 and became the Section Head of the Echocardiography Laboratory. He is also the co-director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program, a Senior Associate Scientist for the Research Institute at SickKids, and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto. His clinical expertise is in pediatric echocardiography and vascular imaging. His research interests focus on cardiovascular function in children with acquired and congenital heart disease and on the development and validation of novel echocardiographic techniques. He has been involved in leadership positions within different professional organizations in Europe and North America.
